Myopia or Nearsightedness is a condition when the distance
objects appear blur but near objects are clear. It is corrected by using minus lenses (concave lens). By 2050, there is an estimate that nearly half the people in theworld will have myopia and if left untreated may cause severe visual impairment or blindness.
Types:
Low myopia: Generally less than 3 D of myopia
Moderate myopia: From 3 to 6 D of myopia
High myopia: More than 6 D of myopia
Symptoms:
Moving closer to reading materials, TV screen, Mobile phone,
Squinting or partially closing eyelids to see clearly
Difficulty seeing school blackboard/screen, road signs, etc
Headache and Eyestrain
Rubbing eyes too much
Blinking too frequently
Risk factors:
Genetics: One or both parent being myopic
Prolong near work: Prolong close-up activities for longer time duration increase myopia
Less outdoor activities and more screen time
Education level and school type
Environmental conditions: Improper diet, disturbed sleep pattern, etc
Complications:
General impact: Difficulty in social
interactions, poor self-esteem, decreased
level of school performance, reduced
quality of life, more anxiety or stress,
etc.
Ocular Complications: Uncorrected
myopia or high myopia can lead to
serious eye conditions like early
cataract, glaucoma, retinal detachment,
macular degeneration, posterior
staphyloma, etc leading to severe visual
impairment and finally to blindness.
